LEGENDS, LIONS & THE PEARL

A paradise of warm waters, sun-drenched beaches, eco-wonderlands and cosmopolitan people, the province of KwaZulu-Natal (also known as the Zulu Kingdom) is steeped in history, hospitality and adventure. From Durban’s bustling gateway of ports, fine dining and first-class shopping outlets to the historic battlefields, this sunny South African region offers the perfect mix for the adventure seeker and discerning traveller.

We would like to recommend some of the best ways to discover this beautiful region. See some the world's most amazing animals on a 'Big Five' safari in the &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, go on a Battlefield Tour with Fugitive's Drift or stay at the Rocktail Bay Beach Camp with the Safari Adventure Company.

We have also compiled a selection of suggested itineraries, to help you make the most of your trip to the KwaZulu Natal region.

BATTLEFIELD TOURS - Fugitives' Drift

The reserve offers a choice of accommodation in either the Lodge or the Guest House, both owned by the Rattrays and born out of their extensive experience in hospitality, evident in every corner of Fugitives’ Drift, is their love of South Africa, its people and its unique history.

Spacious, luxury en-suite cottages each have private verandahs and broad views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The Lodge and Guest House both have swimming pools, set in their colourful well established gardens, home to innumerable bird species.

BATTLEFIELD TOURS
Flagship tours to Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift are led by registered tour guides Rob Caskie, Joseph Ndima and George Irwin, who are superb storytellers and make the history of that day come alive. Learn of the bravery and mobility of the Zulu army that defeated the British Army at the Battle of Isandlwana and listen at sunset to the famous story of Rorke's Drift, where 139 British soldiers were attacked by 4000 Zulu warriors; a British victory which saw the award of more Victoria Crosses than in any other battle in history.

RORKE’S DRIFT
Listen at sunset to the famous story of Rorke’s Drift, where 139 British soldiers were attacked by 4,000 Zulu warriors, winning more Victoria Crosses than in any other battle in history, returning to the Lodge or Guest House in time for a drink around the fireplace.

  • On a one night stay, we recommend that you arrive before 1pm in order to join the afternoon tour to Rorke’s Drift. You would then do the Isandlwana tour the following morning and depart either after lunch or directly after the tour.
  • On a two night stay, you may choose whether to join the tour to Rorke’s Drift on the afternoon of your arrival or to wait until the following afternoon and undertake the tours in the correct historical order.
  • On a three night stay, you may split the tours and go to Isandlwana on the morning after your arrival and Rorke’s Drift on your second afternoon, thereby having the time to relax and enjoy other activities

GETTING TO FUGITIVES DRIFT
Situated at Rorkes Drift in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, Fugitives Drift is an easy five hour drive on good roads from Johannesburg and three and a half hours from Durban.

ROCKTAIL BAY BEACH CAMP - Safari Adventure Company

Rocktail Beach Camp is set in the lush Maputaland Coastal Forest covering the ancient dunes that make up the edge of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal coast. With the Maputaland Marine Reserve just offshore and the beach a brisk 20-minute walk from the camp, the world-class diving and snorkelling, remote, unspoilt beaches and other beach adventures will leave the visitor captivated.

The camp consists of 17 rooms (9 standard rooms plus 8 suites), all with en-suite bathrooms. Seven of these are family suites with a shared bathroom and two bedrooms for two adults and two children. A honeymoon suite has wonderful views over the ocean and dune forest.
Rocktail Beach Camp also has a central dining room, bar and lounge with large wrap-around veranda. A raised viewing deck just off the veranda has wide views that extend out to the ocean. The camp’s main area has a wine cellar, large pool, curio shop and children’s playroom.

From a scuba diving perspective, Rocktail Bay is unique. Not only is the diving conducted within a Reserve and World Heritage Site along unspoiled reefs, but divers have the luxury of knowing that they alone have access to these sites and are the only underwater visitors along this stretch of the coastline.
Other activities include Forest trails, Bird watching - coastal forest and grasslands and Surf/rock fishing.
