Positioned on the edge of the Indian Oceans, sub-tropical Durban enjoys mild to sunny winters and warm humid summers. There are no health risks to travelling in the Western Cape and no vaccinations are required. Tap water is safe to drink. Durban is a friendly city, although it is advised that safety precautions be taken in poverty-stricken areas where crime and theft can be a problem. Do not carry large amounts of cash and be discreet with expensive cameras and jewellery. Take care not to walk in deserted areas, especially after dark and park in designated, well-lit areas.
