With the arrival of winter comes roaring fires, comfort food and the temptation to hibernate indoors. And while these are all time-honoured traditions, sometimes we just can’t help but crave a little sunshine. From the scenic South African coastline to the beaches of Florida and even the wild and windswept shores of the British Isles, we’ve selected some of our favourite winter getaways to inspire your next luxury retreat.
Florida, The Chesterfield Palm Beach
Florida is called the “Sunshine State” for a reason. Bathed in sunshine for most months of the year, it possesses one of the longest coastlines in the US, making Florida one of our favourite winter sun getaways. And well-placed to soak up all the breezy optimism is the chic Chesterfield Palm Beach, surrounded by palm-lined boulevards and just a few moments away from the beach.
South Africa, The Oyster Box
Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the Oyster Box is one of those locations that looks good all year round, but especially in February. That’s when the ultimate symbol of charm and luxury really comes in to its own, offering tranquillity and peace in the shadow of the local lighthouse.
Switzerland, Hotel d’Angleterre
Switzerland rarely leaps to mind when people think of winter sun, but just because it’s cold, that doesn’t mean it’s not sunny. And where better to enjoy the blazing sun than the Hotel d’Angleterre, which offers unrivalled views over the glittery lake Geneva’s Jet d’Eau, as well as verdant lakeside garden.
Guernsey, The Duke of Richmond
Continually wrestling with the Isles of Scilly over which part of the British Isles is warmest in summer, Guernsey often makes for a great blustery winter break. Whether visitors stroll along Cobo Bay beach, buy from the ‘hedge stalls’ (that sell home-grown vegetables), or hit the gardens of Castle Cornet, the smart Duke of Richmond is the perfect place to rest, especially for a spot of afternoon tea.
Dorset, The Acorn Inn
Let’s be honest, the sun rarely has its hat on when it comes to the rolling hills of Dorset in February. Who cares though when they see just how tremendous the place looks in types of weather. On almost any day, few people can think of a more attractive prospect than rambling through Thomas Hardy country, into the picturesque village of Evershot, and snoozing at The Acorn Inn, the epitome of historical character and charm.
