At The Oyster Box Hotel, our commitment to environmental and social responsibility has a multifaceted approach, find out more about our holistic dedication to creating a positive impact on both the environment and the community below.

CLIMATE

Here at the Oyster Box, we are proud to use Diligent to measure our carbon footprint, allowing us to implement changes wherever possible to reduce it. Additionally, we use Iron Mountain as our digital portfolio for all hotel documents, reducing paper waste considerably within the hotel. Lastly, we track our power and water meterage monthly, with the hope to reduce consumption in all aspects of our property, this would allow for the teams of each area to see their impact and look to solutions on reductions.

We are also dedicated to eliminating all single use plastics (SUP) and have made good headway. We are currently auditing every department for any remaining single use plastics still in use, and are looking to alternative materials or alternate solutions. This demand for eliminating SUP extends to our suppliers as well, with some also adopting a desire to remove SUP from their operations. We are confident in our progress achieved to date and have just 10 remaining plastics in our operation, which is a decrease of around 80%.

FOOD

breakfast at the oyster boxKitchens can waste up to 20% of food purchased, often equivalent to their total net profits, as chefs too often lack the necessary tools to accurately measure and manage waste. Here at The Oyster Box Hotel, what gets measured gets managed, and by using data intelligently kitchens can be made more efficient. Winnow develops technology to help chefs achieve greater visibility in their kitchens and make better decisions that lead to dramatically reduced food waste and costs. In 2020, Red Carnation Hotels partnered with Winnow Solutions to tackle the issue of food waste and set targets to halve this by 2025.

Local & Organic Suppliers

At The Oyster Box Hotel, we place a great significance on using premium, locally sourced products throughout the hotel as this enables us to provide exceptional service, whilst being aligned with these values. We are proud to offer guests freshly produced, organic honey delivered from the hotel as well as using Seaforth Farm, a local supplier that helps fill the honey gap.

VOLUNTEERING

Enriching lives in our local community is at the forefront of our our outreach efforts. Working with local brands and community leaders around the province, we are dedicated to the betterment of people, animal and wildlife. Just some of our volunteering efforts include making regular donations to local NGO's such as Bobbi Bear, who provide shelter, rehabilitation and protection of sexually abused children in our province as well as raising awareness and education on HIV, as we see a direct correlation between soaring HIV figures and children who have been sexually abused, also contracting HIV.

We also having a relationship with BASISA, an NGO centered around child care in rural communities. Currently partnered on their soap initiative, we send them our used guest soap waste when we reach a 20kg mark. This soap is then re-crafted by them, and made a part of wellness packs for these children, where they are taught the importance of personal hygiene and the increased chance or illness living in a rural based community.

In terms of planet projects undertaken at the hotel, we do frequent beach clean ups along our shoreline. As our hotel is on the shoreline, it is imperative that we put in our own efforts to ensure the conservation of the oceans.
